For whatever reason,  working on IT often falls down the priority list for small business owners.
It makes a lot of sense, for most people it isn’t directly responsible for the sales life blood of their business. But if it disappeared overnight everything would very quickly grind to a halt. You don’t need us to tell you how vitally important computers are in the day to day way we live and run not only our companies, but our lives.
So today we’re talking about four very important reasons why small businesses don’t invest in their IT – and why in the long run that might not be the best idea.

The cost is prohibitive

When you’re a small business, especially when you’re starting out, a healthy cash flow is the lifeblood of your business. Often spending money on things like IT can feel like an indulgence you aren’t able to afford. But if you weren’t confident on doing your own tax return, would you skimp on hiring an accountant?
It’s worth thinking about IT services like any other professional service you might engage. Investing a little bit of money in it up front will mean that later down the line you have jobs you don’t have to do two or three times over.
All of this saves you time, time that you can invest back into the high value tasks in your business.

It currently feels manageable

If you’re a one man band, or if you’ve got one or two employees or contractors working for you, then your IT systems and process may feel manageable. They probably are manageable in the grand scheme of things.
However, what if your plan is to grow your business? This raises a couple of questions – firstly, can you afford for the increased IT burden to dig into your time as you scale? Secondly, how good are the foundations you’ve set up?
Spending a little bit now could save you in the long run if you’re working to put in place really scalable systems.

Challenge to carve out thinking time

You might have already thought about how to build business systems and processes that you can scale as you grow, but like all business owners you’re probably time poor – so how do you find the time to think through and implement important decisions for your business?
On the IT front we’ve talked before on the blog about the real benefits of a consultation. Booking one in will really help to carve out some time to think specifically about these issues and hopefully help you to start taking action on them.
