One thing that more often than not feels timeless and unchanged is Christmas. Yes, Christmas, which is rapidly approaching in the next few weeks. But has this festive day been left untouched like a blanket
of snow on the proverbial “white Christmas”? The answer is, not really. Today we’re going to take a look at the ways that technology has completely changed the way that we prepare and organise ourselves
for Christmas – even if it hasn’t replaced our turkey… just yet.
So the easy and immediate difference to spot is how we are all shopping. Long gone are the days where your only option is to brave busy high streets or heaving shopping centres in the run-up to Christmas. Whilst plenty of people still like to enjoy their shopping in this way, plenty more of us are turning to internet shopping to provide gifts for our friends and family.
According to sleeknote, approximately 26% people worldwide are internet shoppers. That makes for an eye-popping 2.05 billion people!
A large reason why more and more of us are turning to online shopping now is because of just how easy it is. No longer is it just Amazon, or other big retailers who are able to meet our gifting needs but
a plethora of smaller online retailers are now available so that even unique and personalised gifts can be purchased online.
Another change you may have noticed is the reduction of physical Christmas cards that you receive through the post. Yes, you’ll probably still likely to get something sent through from your Gran –
but from colleagues and from your friend that lives out in Dubai you’re probably going to get a digital Christmas card.
Ultimately, this isn’t a problem. Firstly it’s the thought of sending something that is most important, so that people know you’re thinking of them. Secondly, think of the waste that you’re helping to reduce by
not sending a Christmas card. Remember years gone by stuffing tonnes of envelopes and cards into the recycling? Digital cards are a great idea.
These were unavoidably at the height of fashion last year (for reasons relating to the other C-word). However, there is certainly a good reason to use virtual Christmas gatherings as an opportunity to catch
up with friends and family that it would otherwise be difficult to see face to face.
The fact of the matter is that this type of technology has been available for a while, but out of necessity more people are using it than ever. If for no other reason than people are more confident using
it, expect to see more virtual Christmas gatherings this year and in years to come.
