At this time of year, there are two things that may be going through your head. The first thing, particularly if you like to be proactive and organised, will be sorting out a Valentine’s day gift for your significant other. The second? Well, January tends to be a time when people are getting frustrated with their jobs and are starting to look for something else.
But is it really a change of job that you need to make, or would it be better if you were just able to take some time to reflect on what you really love about your job in the first place? Is it possible (with a little bit of IT help) to fall back in love with your work?
One of the biggest frustrations that many of us have is that so much of our job is often taken up by superfluous things. We got into the work that we do, to do that work – not to have to endure numerous, tedious meetings, answer email after email and generally deal with the admin that comes as standard for the modern workplace.
Yes, arguably, many of these things do help facilitate you in the work you do – but when they are what you are spending the majority of your time on, rather than the things that actually make up the job you’re employed to do – something needs to change.
And it is entirely possible for you to be the person to make that change happen.
You don’t (and shouldn’t) hang around waiting for your work to change, you are the person that can shift things about so that you fall back in love with your work.
A simple change that could help is to make better use of your calendar and schedule when you want to be doing particular tasks. As an example, if you know that you do your best work in the morning make sure your schedule out that time in your calendar so that you get to do focused work and don’t get caught in the trap of emails and meetings.
Obviously, it won’t be possible to have this as a hard and fast rule the entire time, but its certainly one tip that you can take forward to reclaim control over your work.
Being big proponents of making life and streamlined and easy for ourselves as possible, we really believe that there are IT tools that can make you fall in love with your work again. And it really is all about ensuring that you aren’t drowning in the admin that comes with your job.
We’ve already mentioned using your calendar above, and there are plenty of apps that can help shut out distractions if you’re having trouble keeping focused in your allotted time frame. Using Microsoft Teams for meetings is equally helpful to streamline meeting face to face – and thankfully many more of us are using these tools now that working from home is more necessary.
Just a quick refocus on the tools you’re using to help you do your job, might just make you fall in love with it all over again.
