As summer approaches many of us will be planning to take some time to rest, recuperate and reflect on the year so far.

If you’re anything like some of the small business owners we know though, after about two days you’ll end up with itchy feet and be dying to get stuck into something.
Unsurprisingly the summer is actually a perfect time for planning. Take advantage of when things are a little slower so that you can really hit the ground running when the holidays finish.
Inspired to get planning? Here are some things you can focus on:

Business planning

We are already a quarter of the way through the financial year, so you should have a good chunk of data to understand how things are going.
The summer is often a naturally quieter time for many different types of businesses. It makes it a good time to take stock and review what’s going well and what things you want to work on.
It also means that you can identify and map out some strategies for the things you want to work on – which will mean when it comes to getting busier again, you should have started to bed in these new strategies.

Personal development

Of all the summer priorities this is one that gets put on the back burner way too often. Because this often doesn’t focus on the immediate here and now it can feel more intangible than something like business planning.
However, you should be spending time on developing yourself. Investing in yourself will always be the best investment you can ever make.
So, this summer make time to do a course, watch some lectures or read a book. It doesn’t have to be massive, but you’ll thank yourself for it in the long run.

Review software and IT needs

It would be remiss of us if we didn’t take this opportunity to remind you that the summer is an excellent time to review your IT and software needs. As with CPD, you’ve got some time to bed in new systems before the autumn rush.
We’ve covered some of these topics in more detail previously (so will refer back), but as a minimum.
Review your hardware and check to see if it’s time to upgrade that 8-year-old laptop.
Review your software and make sure you aren’t reliant on out-of-date systems that won’t be updated any longer.
And absolutely, if you do nothing else, update your password!
